Mindful Ramblings
One of the greatest bands ever?

This was originally written as a reply to the "Rolling Stone's top 50" article, but I liked it and would like to enlighten others on the glory of Pearl Jam, if they are so interested. Reply, folks, and I'll let you know what's what!

Thank you, Sean, for giving a shout out to Pearl Jam. As a major fan, it's often difficult to distance myself from the band enough to look at them objectively. But, many of my friends and other people I've "polled" who were alive in the 90's, even though they're not crazy Pearl Jam fans, admit how much these boys influenced certainly their decade if not the course of rock and roll.

When I discuss Pearl Jam, which I love to do, one of the biggest arguments I get against their greatness is "They sound just like everyone else." This just makes me want to slap stupid people. EVERYONE ELSE sounds like THEM. They were the first of their sound to make an impact (I don't consider Nirvana to sound like Pearl Jam, though definitely both are marquees of the same era) even though other great bands like Alice in Chains and Soundgarden were forming at the same time. But bands like Creed, who have often caught the criticism of imitating Pearl Jam, have done just that. They've cheapened what Pearl Jam stood for, which was individuality and activism. PJ members Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard even went so far as to sue and boycott Ticketmaster, the tour industry giant, for jacking up ticket prices. They lost a lot of fans at this point because few people were able to see their shows, but they maintained. And as a band, they've evolved through the years, unlike Metallica, who just sold out.

Pearl Jam captured the feel of the early to mid nineties more than any other band out there. And that's my opinion.

Not a hardcore Pearl Jam fan, but I've listened to them ever since Ten (as regular readers of my blog can attest to). I cherish Pearl Jam for a lot of reasons, but primarily because they evolve. Their music changed over time, grew up, matured so to speak. I picked up "Lost Dogs" a while ago, had a bit of fun trying to guess which songs came from which time period. Got most of them right, except for Yellow Ledbetter, wouldn't have guessed it was from the Ten era in a million years

Mack,
Yes! I was hoping I wasn't the only one who did that. I admittedly did not buy the cd, but my friend burned me a copy, so I'm not sure if my guesses were dead on or not, but I feel pretty confident about most of them.
Also, Yellow Ledbetter, though one of their overplayed songs, is one of my favorite songs, period.

Chris, you know that I've never been a big pearl jam fan, but I will say they have done some of the best covers I've ever heard...which may be blasphemous to someone like yourself. During their era I was headphoned in mostly to Nirvana, STP, Smashing Pumpkins, etc..Pearl Jam kind of seems like a 90s version of The Doors to me.....very musical and interpretive. They definitely found a niche and seemed pretty damn original to me, cause if they had sounded like the rest of the grunge scene at the time then I probably would've enjoyed their music more....can't dispute their talent.

I got into grunge with Nirvana, Hole, and Pearl Jam. "Better Man" is one of my favorite songs by them.

Arrgh! Ted!
Why dost thine criticisms have to hit thy mark so closely!?

While what you said is not something I, nor any Pearl Jam fan, would consider complimentary...I can't dispute any of those remarks. Damn you!

Except that the Doors are the most overrated band in the history of infinity. And if you're saying Pearl Jam is overrated, I owe you a punch.
