Mindful Ramblings
I mean $13.86
Published on February 23, 2004 By Unfairman In Misc
So I got a check in the mail today. For thirteen dollars and eighy-six cents. I can now half fill my gas tank.

It's from the Compact Disc Minimum Advertised Price Anti-trust Litigation. Thinking back, VERY HARD, I remember signing up for this class action lawsuit probably back in High School...I graduated five years ago. This is our court system in action, folks. If I recall, it was something about music stores overcharging for CD's...they got sued by 47 states, and I think the real winner here is me.

It made me wonder what the point of large class action lawsuits are. I mean, seriously, why waste the court's time if 5,000 people are going to get $13.87? Then it occured to me...lawyers! I mean...they have to get something out of this, right? They woudln't waste thier time trying a suit if they didn't get well paid out of the settlement. Would you? I wouldn't. So, basically, they get paid mucho dinero for a process that takes years and has very little payoff for everyone else involved PLUS they trick us into thinking they're magnanimous by taking on this class action lawsuit. Of course, I may be wrong as I don't know the facts, but in this Republican -ruled-look-out-for-number-one world it wouldn't surprise me too much. And even if that isn't the case, see how cynical I've become to this world? Man, people really make me sick sometimes.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love the $13.86. LIke I said, it's gas money. I don't want to come across as one of those people who complain even when a small winfall comes their way...but like I said, this world has really turned me cynical. But I'll remain ever optimistic. Who knows? maybe my next class action lawsuit will be for 15 dollars.

LOL, can you imagine how much money "your" attorneys made on the deal? Class actions are for the shysters, a lot of people get pennies, a few lawyers get millions.

well now the cd companies know that if they form a trust and artificially raise prices they will have to pay back .1% of their profits back to someone.

the part i remember is that if too many people signed up the money was supposed to go to some general charity.

Oh, you're right russ! I remember that part, too. Maybe I should donate my $13.86 to charity. It would be minor act, no doubt, but the significance would minimal as well.

you got cheated out of x dollars by the cd companies. spend your settlement in good health and clear conscience.

I think Shakespeare said it best when he said,

"First we'll kill all the lawyers"

I got the same check Chris. It made me really paranoid to get it like as if soon as I cashed it RIAA would come in here and take my computer and punch me in the crotch. Well hopefully not in the crotch. Anyway, back to work.

Oh! Good. I wonder, Ted, did we all get the same amount or was it based on how many cd's you bought? I can't remember.

if you're not elderly or a 12-year old girl you're probably safe.

Ha ha, fortunately I'm neither, though this pain in my back and knees leads me to believe otherwise.
