It happens every Spring, here in the north. The air warms, the sun starts to shine, the snow melts and squirrels come out to chatter to you about how the past few months have been for them. Smiles appear on even the most dour of faces, and lawns that haven't been seen in 4 months stop by, like an old friend for a chat.
And then BAM! Temperatures drop again, the sky goes gray and unloads 6 inches of snow on the heathen ground. The clouds roar their laughter as their frozen piss blankets the lawn, the low temperatures freeze the little squirrellies and people veer off the road once again, turning their smiles upside down.
It happens EVERY year, and yet people still get upset and and can't believe it when the cold snap hits. Most peoople around here are relatively smart, and most of them have lived here for 20 years or more. What don't you get, people? There WILL be snow on the ground at the beginning of May. We will NOT have an early Spring, now matter what Pungsatawney Phil's fat ass says.
My Freshman year of college, Spring 2000 was an extreme case. Temperatures rose to the 70's in the middle of February (I'm not kidding), girls were sunbathing and we "men" we're trying to impress them by playing football with our shirts off. The very next week we had a foot of snow on the ground and, sadly, the girls replaced their bikinis with parkas. The weather of the week before was already a distant memory we will recount to our children and grandchildren, one they won't quite believe because we don't quite believe it ourselves.
This is life in Minnesota.
